‘Bloodsport’ Reimagining in the Works from Michaela Coel, A24

Nearly forty years ago, Bloodsport launched the career of Jean-Claude Van Damme and helped propel him as a bankable leading man known for his glistening muscles and martial arts prowess. The 1988 film centered on a U.S. Army captain who partakes in an underground martial arts competition in Hong Kong.

Among the fans of the Bloodsport concept turns out to Michaela Coel, the BAFTA-winning creator of the acclaimed series I May Destroy You. The actor, writer and director is teaming with A24 for a reimagining of the film, which she will write and direct.

“I have long been in awe of fighters, and astounded by the discipline, intensity and isolation the sport demands of them. I am excited to explore this world, especially so with A24 as my collaborators. LET’S FUCKING GO,” Coel said in a statement.

The new Bloodsport counts Marc Toberoff as producer, with Stuart Manashil and Peggy DiSalle serving as executive producers.

“In 1988, the now-iconic Bloodsport introduced audiences to the gritty aesthetic of mixed martial arts, and I look forward to bringing back that high-energy tournament format to the big screen again,” said Toberoff.

Newt Arnold directed the original Bloodsport, which earned a strong $11.8 million, though there was come controversy attached to it. Co-writer Sheldon Lettich has claimed that martial artist Frank Dux, whose stories inspired the movie, fabricated many of the tales. And Van Damme told The Hollywood Reporter in 2019 that he personally oversaw a cut of the movie, as the first version was unwatchable. Three sequels followed that did not star Van Damme, with a remake discussed in 2011.

Coel has become an A24 favorite, and is currently filming the miniseries First Day on Earth for A24, HBO and the BBC. She wrote, executive produces, co-directs and stars in the project, and will soon also be on screens in A24’s Mother Mary opposite Anne Hathaway.

Coel is repped by UTA and Maison Two.
