The worlds of Aliens and Star Wars collided at the Oscars on Sunday night.
Sigourney Weaver, who starred in 1986’s Aliens, and Pedro Pascal, who stars in the upcoming film The Mandalorian & Grogu, appeared onstage to present the award for best production design at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. (Weaver also appears in the Star Wars movie, which hits theaters May 22.)
“Production designers possess a special kind of movie magic that happens long before the cameras roll,” Weaver began. “It begins with a sketch, a texture, a doorway, and suddenly, an entire world exists.”
Added (a clean-shaven!) Pascal, “Cities, palaces, entire galaxies.”
Said Weaver, “Sometimes even alien worlds that our characters live in.”
Pascal then noted that “Weaver,” who also stars in the Avatar franchise, has “had some experience with those,” she replied: “A little — the good, the bad and the downright adorable!”
The actress then blew a kiss to someone in the audience, who turned out to be Grogu (aka Baby Yoda), sitting by Kate Hudson.
“Get away from him, you bitch!” Weaver told her, calling back to a famous quote her Aliens character, Ripley, says in the movie.
“Wow, good character recall,” Pascal said. “I peed myself a little.”
A few minutes later, Oscars host Conan O’Brien noted that Grogu was physically not able to clap and encouraged the creature to try — to no avail.
Grogu appeared to be either a puppet or an animatronic. Video online shows the creature being taken away by a handler.
Meanwhile, Tamara Deverell and Shane Vieau went on to win the Oscar for best production design for their work on Frankenstein.
The 98th Oscars took place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday night. See the full list of winners, and catch up with The Hollywood Reporter’s coverage.
