The house of legendary Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami (Taste of Cherry, Certified Copy) has reportedly been hit and damaged in air strikes on the Chizar district of Tehran.
Posting on social media, Kiarostami’s son Ahmad Kiarostami said his father’s house was hit during last night’s bombing raid. Heavy airstrikes struck multiple areas in the Iranian capital city, resulting in blackouts across large section of Tehran. The attack came shortly after Israel announced it would be targeting infrastructure in Iran as Israel and the U.S. continue the war against Iran that began on Feb. 28.
“Last night, the Chizar neighborhood was bombed, where both my mother’s and my father’s houses are located,” said Kiarostami. “Last night, my mother called and, in a shaky and broken voice, gave me news of her well-being, but this morning I learned that my father’s house was damaged.”
Abbas Kiarostami, who died in 2016, was one of Iran’s most acclaimed directors. He won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes film festival for Taste of Cherry in 1997. His international work included the 2010 French drama Certified Copy starring Juliette Binoche.
President Trump said there had been “very strong talks” with Iran to end the war, though Iranian officials have not confirmed that. The hostilities continued on Tuesday, with Iran launching missiles targeting Israel and the semiautonomous Kurdish region in Iraq. Persian Gulf nations also reported more drone and missile launches on Tuesday.
The Israeli military on Tuesday said it had carried out over 3,000 strikes against Iran since the war began. Separately, Israel pressed on with its campaign in Lebanon against the Iran-backed militia group Hezbollah,, issuing new evacuation warnings for the country’s south and raising fears that Israeli is preparing for a wider ground invasion.
