Apple TV is eyeing a limited series starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cecily Strong for its next green light.
The streamer is developing a show based on the New York magazine story “The Nanny Squatter” by Bindu Bansinath. Mary Bronstein, the writer-director of If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, is adapting the article and is set to serve as showrunner. The project comes from Apple Studios and is nearing a series order.
The series will follow a couple “whose lives are upended after welcoming a seemingly ideal caregiver into their home, only to find boundaries blurred and control slipping as the arrangement spirals into a tense, unsettling power struggle,” the logline reads.
Should it go to series — as it looks likely to — the show will be the first regular role for Louis-Dreyfus since her multiple Emmy-winning tenure on HBO’s Veep ended in 2019. Her recent credits include Thunderbolts and a few other Marvel Cinematic Universe appearances as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Netflix’s movie You People and features You Hurt My Feelings and Tuesday.
The show would mark a return to Apple TV for Strong, who starred in the streamer’s musical comedy Schmigadoon! The former Saturday Night Live regular has a voice role in Disney’s Zootopia 2 and will appear in Prime Video’s The Boys prequel Vought Rising.
The show will mark the first TV series for Bronstein, whose If I Had Legs I’d Kick You has earned critical acclaim, a WGA Award nomination for her screenplay and a Spirit Award nomination for best director (star Rose Byrne is up for the best actress Oscar). Bronstein will be the showrunner, writer and director on the show and executive produce with Louis-Dreyfus, Strong and Skip Wasserman for New York magazine.
Louis-Dreyfus is repped by CAA and Latham & Watkins. Strong is with CAA and Brillstein Entertainment Partners. Bronstein is repped by CAA, attorney David Krintzman and 42West. New York magazine and Vox Media Studios are repped by CAA and Del Shaw.
