New Line has once again brightened up to the idea of a sequel to its 2016 supernatural horror hit Lights Out.
The Warner Bros. division has hired up-and-comer Connor Osborne McIntyre to write the screenplay for the sequel, which has been on and off again on the development track over the years.
Original producer Lawrence Grey is returning as producer while Eric Heisserer and David F. Sandberg, who respectively wrote and directed the movie, will also produce.
Additional producers on the roster include Ben Everard and Lotta Losten. Atomic Monster, the banner run by James Wan, also one of the original movie’s producers, is a producing as well.
Lights Out was the directorial debut for Sandberg, who went on to direct Annabelle: Creation and Shazam!, and was based on his original short.
The feature told of a ghost entity that lives in the shadow and dark recesses of buildings as it haunts a family. Teresa Palmer, Maria Bello, Gabriel Bateman and Alexander DiPersia starred.

Lights Out was a massive money maker for New Line, grossing $149 million worldwide on a production budget of less than $5 million. New Line has taken stabs at developing a sequel with Heisserer and Chris Borrelli penning scripts over the years.

McIntyre is a scribe on the upswing. He wrote Animals, the upcoming dramatic thriller that Ben Affleck directed and stars in alongside Gillian Anderson, Steven Yeun, and Kerry Washington. And his original script American Midnight was featured on last year’s Black List of best unproduced screenplays and sold to Netflix with Vertigo Entertainment and Spooky Pictures producing. Previously, his original screenplay Copenhagen sold to Makeready and Fifth Season.
