Janie Bryant first came to Montana for work. Now, when she’s there, she hikes, shops vintage and slips easily into her weekend uniform: jeans and cowboy boots.
The Emmy-winning costume designer behind several Taylor Sheridan series, including 1883, 1923 and Landman, was most recently in the state for Paramount+’s The Madison. Since first filming there five years ago, Bozeman has become something like a home away from home.

Bryant says she first felt a connection to the state while filming 1883. “My crew and I were driving to Yellowstone, and it had been snowing,” she recalls. “I remember coming up on the mountains, full of pine trees, and it brought me to tears how beautiful the state is. The skies are so wide.”
Since then, Bozeman has become a place where Bryant fills her downtime with hikes, sound baths, chanting and good food. “There are so many places in Bozeman that I love,” she says.

SHOPPING
BOZEMAN VINTAGE “They have different periods [of clothing],” Bryant shares. “They have a lot of great shearling coats from the ’70s. They have beautiful vintage turquoise jewelry. They also have a great kids section, too, with beautiful cowboy boots and a lot of 1970s maxi dresses as well.” 1008 North 7th Ave., Unit F, Bozeman, Montana 59715
“It’s a bit more specialized,” she says of the mother-daughter owned store. “It’s a little more curated. They have beautiful pieces.” 18 S Willson Ave., Bozeman, Montana 59715
ZSA-ZSA’S “It’s one of my favorite jewelry and crystal stores,” Bryant says. “I got the most beautiful pair of turquoise earrings there. My dad used to call me Sleeping Beauty. I went in for my birthday. … [The owner Joanna Pratt] was like, ‘These are from the Sleeping Beauty Mine in New Mexico.’ I said, ‘I’ll take those, please.’ She has the most amazing crystals and stones. Even if you’re not looking for jewelry, it’s such a beautiful place. Joanna knows so much about every single one of the stones and crystals. She’s super knowledgeable.” 23 W Main St., Bozeman, Montana
NATURE, SPIRITUALITY, & TREATMENTS
DRINKING HORSE MOUNTAIN TRAIL “It’s a great hike,” Bryant says of the 2.4-mile loop trail. “I do that one a lot.” Pro tip: “You really have to account for the elevation because you’re like, ‘Oh, that’s not such a long hike,’ but when you get higher up, you can really feel it.”

WILD WISDOM COLLECTIVE “I was reading Bozeman Magazine about spiritual things to do, and I was freaking out [when I read about Wild Wisdom]. On the weekend, they do sound baths and chanting. I did a whole weekend, and it was amazing.” 7 S. Tracy Ave. in Downtown Bozeman, Montana 59715
BODHI FARMS “I went with my mother when she came to visit. Everything is outside. The host is there to greet you, and that’s where we got our massages. They also have a farm-to-table restaurant. It was snowing that day, and the little flakes of snow were coming down. It was so magical and beautiful. The property is gorgeous.” 13624 S. Cottonwood Road, Bozeman, Montana 59718

NORRIS HOT SPRINGS “It’s a fun thing to do,” she says of the natural hot springs. “They dug out a wooden pool, and the water comes up through. Everybody goes there. It’s very rustic. It’s not like going to Canyon Ranch or some fancy spa. I love that it’s totally Montana. It’s more authentic. I mean, who doesn’t also love Canyon Ranch? That is a beautiful experience. I’m just saying, in contrast, going to Norris Hot Springs is rustic and fun.” 42 Montana Highway 84, Norris, Montana 59745
HOTELS
KIMPTON ARMORY HOTEL “This is where I stay. They have lovely service. Everybody’s so sweet.” 24 West Mendelhall St., Bozeman, Montana 59715
