TikTok Returns to Juno Awards After Canada Reverses Shutdown Order

TikTok will return to sponsoring the Juno Awards this weekend after reaching a settlement with the Canadian government that allows the video social media platform to continue operating locally.

“The joy of music discovery has always been at the heart of TikTok, and we look forward to celebrating the artistry of Canadian musicians at The 2026 Juno Awards,” the video social media platform said in a statement ahead of Canada’s music awards taking place this weekend. Justin Bieber and Tate McRae lead the nominations for Canada’s version of the Grammys to take place in Hamilton, Ontario.

The Canadian government’s settlement with TikTok Canada followed an investigation by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and provincial counterparts into TikTok Technology Canada Inc. over national security grounds.

As it returns to the Junos, TikTok will allow select Canadian digital creators to stream behind-the-scenes looks at the Junos, including a set reveal, backstage tours, artist rehearsals and red carpet coverage. The partnership with the Canadian Academy of Recording Artists, which organizes the Junos, comes after Ottawa allowed TikTok Canada to keep its local operations in place following a 2024 order to close its offices in Toronto.

TikTok Canada’s sponsorship of major Canadian cultural events like the Junos and the Toronto Film Festival were suspended after the 2024 security grounds order as the federal government targeted TikTok’s Chinese parent, ByteDance, with an investigation now concluded with a formal settlement. Even as TikTok Canada withdrew sponsorships, Canadians were still able to access the social media giant via the TikTok app.

The new Canadian deal for TikTok follows the U.S. sale of the social video platform to a consortium of American investors, leading to a new joint venture owner stateside, TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC. The managing investors include Oracle Corporation, Silver Lake, and MGX (Abu Dhabi’s state investment firm).

The 2026 Junos will air live on the CBC network and will be hosted by Mae Martin.
