‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’ Gets Close-Up With New Miles Morales Scene

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse thwipped up some new footage at CinemaCon, where Sony shared a look at the upcoming trilogy capper.

As part of Monday night’s presentation, writer-producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller were joined on stage by directors Justin K. Thompson and Bob Persichetti, as Miller promised it was “the most emotional Spider-Verse film we have ever made” and Lord dubbted it the “most spectacular.” They explained that the new film will pick up the moment the last movie, Across the Spider-Verse, ended, with main character Miles Morales lost in an alternate dimension.

In the new footage, Miles is tied up and trying to talk his way to freedom, when he is approached by another version of himself — who also goes by Miles Morales but says he can call him “The Prowler.” They are both bewildered by the discovery of the multi-verse identities and fight over the different ways they are pronouncing “Morales” — with what degree of accent — and their respective fashion senses.

The two Mileses continue to fight, until the original version warns he doesn’t want to hurt his captors, as they laugh — until electricity surges through his hands and he runs free. Sony also offered up a supercut of pieces from throughout the film, which showcases a wide variety of animation styles as Miles fights battles both in and outside of himself, and is joined by his sidekick characters from the past films.

Beyond the Spider-Verse follows the cliffhanger ending of Across the Spider-Verse, which grossed more than $690 million in 2023. The franchise launched with 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse, which won the Oscar for best animated feature and was credited with pushing the animation genre into new, more experimental directions.

Shameik Moore voice stars as Miles Morales, the Brooklyn teen Spider-Man and Hailee Steinfeld as Spider-Gwen. The new installment has a script by Lord, Miller and David Callaham.

Lord and Miller are riding high from the Amazon MGM Studios hit Project Hail Mary, and have turned their attention to Beyond the Spider-Verse for the next year as it races toward its June 18, 2027 release date.

Sony Pictures Animation bosses Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville recently told The Hollywood Reporter that they believe the animation on the new installment more than lives up to its predecessors.

“I was like, ‘How are they going to top [2023’s] Across the Spider-Verse?’ And then we’re looking at art and design [for 2027’s Beyond the Spider-Verse], and it’s really blowing my mind. We look at a lot of art, but what we saw at the last presentation, I’m like, ‘Wow,’” said De Froberville.
