‘Death Becomes Her’ to End Broadway Run

Death Becomes Her will end its run June 28, after about 20-months on Broadway.

The musical, adapted from the 1992 film, opened at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on Nov. 21, 2024, after beginning previews on October 23. While it was initially a well-attended, high-grossing show, often bringing in more than $1.2 million a week, the musical has seen its grosses and attendance slump starting in January. As of the week ended May 10, the musical brought in just above $760,000.

The musical features direction and choreography by Christopher Gattelli, a book by Marco Pennette, and an original score by Julia Mattison and Noel Carey. The lead roles of Madeline Ashton and Helen Sharp were originated by Megan Hilty and Jennifer Simard, who were both Tony nominated for their roles. Hilty played her final performance Jan. 11. The current cast includes Simard, Betsy Wolfe as Madeline Ashton, Christopher Sieber, Michelle Williams, Taurean Everett and Josh Lamon.

The musical received 10 Tony nominations, tying for the most nominations of the 2024-2025 season, but ultimately took home one trophy for best costume design.

“Bringing Death Becomes Her to Broadway has been an incredible joy, and we are immensely proud of every artist, musician, crew member, and individual who helped make this show what it is. Night after night, it has been a thrill to watch audiences come together to laugh, celebrate, and embrace the wildly entertaining spirit of this production. We are deeply proud of what this show has brought into the world, and we are excited for its life to continue as it tours across the U.S. and beyond in the years ahead,” said Lowe Cunningham, SVP, Head of Creative & Strategy, Universal Theatrical Group said on behalf of the producers.

Death Becomes Her will launch a multiyear North American tour this September at Playhouse Square in Cleveland, OH.
