See the First Trailer for ‘Elle,’ Prime Video’s ‘Legally Blonde’ Prequel

It turns out Harvard Law was not Elle Woods’ first fish-out-of-water situation.

That’s the story being teased in the first trailer for Elle, Prime Video‘s Legally Blonde prequel series. The show, set in 1995 and starring Lexi Minetree as the title character, is set to premiere July 1 on the Amazon-owned streamer.

Just after she celebrates her birthday in Bel-Air, Elle’s dad, Wyatt, (Tom Everett Scott), informs her that he’s “had to look for other work” and found a job in Seattle — meaning she has to trade her bright pink world for the much rainier Pacific Northwest and its many flannel-clad high schoolers. Watch the teaser below.

The first season (Prime Video has already ordered a second) follows Elle “before she was a fish-out-of-water at Harvard. We meet her in 1995 as a fish in the tumultuous waters of high school where she encounters tricky friendships, forbidden romance, and questionable fashion choices,” the logline reads. “Through it all, Elle uses her family as a touchstone, and forms an even tighter bond to her mother (June Diane Raphael), proving that they can get through anything life throws their way as long as they have each other.”

Jacob Moskovitz, Gabrielle Policano, Chandler Kinney, Zac Looker, and Amy Pietz also star in Elle. The recurring cast includes Jessica Belkin, Danielle Chand, Matt Oberg, Chloe Wepper, Logan Shroyer, Sharon Taylor, David Burtka, Brad Harder, Kayla Maisonet, Lisa Yamada and the late James Van Der Beek.

Laura Kittrell (High School, Insecure) created Elle and serves as co-showrunner alongside Caroline Dries. They executive produce with Reese Witherspoon (who starred in the Legally Blonde movies) and Lauren Neustadter for Hello Sunshine, Amanda Brown, Marc Platt and Jason Moore, who directed the first two episodes. Bryan J. Raber and Asmita Paranjape serve as producers, and Josie Craven and Jen Regan are supervising producers.
